The Simultaneous Education of an Immigrant Parent and Secondary School Child

Abstract


 

Studies have shown that the level of parental education greatly influences student achievement and plays a larger role on a child academic achievement than a family’s socioeconomic status. Yet, few studies of adult education programs examine the influence of simultaneous education of parents on their children’s academic development. This study draws insight from 10 parents who attended ESL classes at a community college while their children attended secondary school. The study showed that simultaneous education of parents with children contributed to improved relationship between children and parents, provided an introspective lens in parents’ ability to consciously monitor children’s school work, enhanced parental involvement in school activities, and increased parental self-efficacy of self and others. In addition, parents expressed several barriers that may have reduced simultaneous education’s benefit on children’s academic development.
